GaVrA Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 So i'v been doing little research, and found 2 pretty good host company's. So i would like(especialy Iris) to tell me what hosting are you using and are you happy with it. I need something cheap for the next several months, and then i would need some dedicated server.
Gorbo Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I say Godaddy by FAR!But if you are seriously in need of something really cheap I could help you out.Possibly for free depending on your needs  My SiteAnd another (heavly custom modded)
Iris Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 oh ok thank you for confidence in me  In hosting, you need to check what kind of servers the hoster has, thus the stats, cpu ram hdd and even DC sometimes. If you have the ability to discuss with hoster , via mail or live support ask on which server you will be placed, ask for some sites that are on that server you will be placed on, to see how fast they are for example in loading. Dont be fooled by stats, a hoster can say i have dual xeon with 2 giga ram. Then the question is how many sites there will be on that server, if it is overcrowded with too many sites , then even if it is a dual server it will be slow. From my point of view the hoster made a mistake as well by not adding another 2 giga of ram which solves many many problems. Gives the server bigger lungs so to speak. an example Pinging www.invisionbyte.net [64.22.96.44]: Ping #1: Got reply from 64.22.96.44 in 20ms [TTL=58]Ping #2: Got reply from 64.22.96.44 in 23ms [TTL=58]Ping #3: Got reply from 64.22.96.44 in 23ms [TTL=58]Ping #4: Got reply from 64.22.96.44 in 22ms [TTL=58] Variation: 2.9ms (+/- 12%) Shortest Time: 20msAverage: 22msLongest Time: 23ms Done pinging www.invisionbyte.net! when i do reverse IP, i find that InvisionByte shares the server with 125 other websites. 64.22.96.44 has address 64.22.96.44Found 126 websites with the IP 64.22.96.44 1) 1st2review.com2) 3boutdoors.net" gping="&POS=97&CM=WPU&CE=75&CS=AWP&SR=75&sample=03) DBLACK7.COM" gping="&POS=82&CM=WPU&CE=60&CS=AWP&SR=60&sample=04) DIESELPUSHERBC.COM" gping="&POS=109&CM=WPU&CE=87&CS=AWP&SR=87&sample=05) DWIGHCO.COM" gping="&POS=84&CM=WPU&CE=62&CS=AWP&SR=62&sample=06) LAKEOFFICE.COM" gping="&POS=87&CM=WPU&CE=65&CS=AWP&SR=65&sample=07) MONTAGULAW.COM" gping="&POS=117&CM=WPU&CE=95&CS=AWP&SR=95&sample=08) MONTAGULAW.COM" gping="&POS=30&CM=WPU&CE=8&CS=AWP&SR=8&sample=09) RIZKERSON.COM" gping="&POS=58&CM=WPU&CE=36&CS=AWP&SR=36&sample=010) STORCHCONSULTING.COM" gping="&POS=69&CM=WPU&CE=47&CS=AWP&SR=47&sample=011) TEDISPRO.COM" gping="&POS=65&CM=WPU&CE=43&CS=AWP&SR=43&sample=012) aggieresistance.com13) aide-en-chaine.com14) aideenchaine.org" gping="&POS=93&CM=WPU&CE=71&CS=AWP&SR=71&sample=015) aikido.capeone.net16) anythingprinted.net17) aprclan.com18) awwed.com19) babyscrapbooking.net20) blog.thetrenchcoat.com21) board.thetrenchcoat.com22) btdkp.stackndie.com23) byelin.com24) cabinetsfactory.com25) calltothesoul.org26) carocat.net" gping="&POS=111&CM=WPU&CE=89&CS=AWP&SR=89&sample=027) cliptard.com" gping="&POS=67&CM=WPU&CE=45&CS=AWP&SR=45&sample=028) communityinteriors.com29) contractwithohio.com30) craigscrimelist.org31) crime-information.com32) dblack7.com33) derandrew09.com34) dieselpusher.com35) dinowalrus.com36) dixiemusclecars.com37) dogbreedersbook.com38) dramaineducationblog.com39) emlectures.com" gping="&POS=72&CM=WPU&CE=50&CS=AWP&SR=50&sample=040) emmanuelclg.org41) emotivesoftware.com42) eternepc.com" gping="&POS=110&CM=WPU&CE=88&CS=AWP&SR=88&sample=043) events-schedules.com44) faithatwork.com45) first-rx.com" gping="&POS=60&CM=WPU&CE=38&CS=AWP&SR=38&sample=046) forums.stackndie.com47) genmicro.com48) gordonandjoyce.net" gping="&POS=92&CM=WPU&CE=70&CS=AWP&SR=70&sample=049) greybeardsongs.com" gping="&POS=36&CM=WPU&CE=14&CS=AWP&SR=14&sample=050) guildofdeath.com" gping="&POS=107&CM=WPU&CE=85&CS=AWP&SR=85&sample=051) herbal-penis-enlargement-pills.net52) herwannanpesapallo.net53) holisticpathstowisdom.co.uk54) home.newadvent.com55) internet-isp-provider.info56) jeffanderle.com57) joffreysrestaurant.com58) juggernuts.com59) kalafut.org" gping="&POS=113&CM=WPU&CE=91&CS=AWP&SR=91&sample=060) knight.org61) ktbeeson.com62) labpressco.com" gping="&POS=108&CM=WPU&CE=86&CS=AWP&SR=86&sample=063) lagirlsny.com" gping="&POS=95&CM=WPU&CE=73&CS=AWP&SR=73&sample=064) literatisocialclub.org65) lns-staging.com" gping="&POS=27&CM=WPU&CE=5&CS=AWP&SR=5&sample=066) lola-forum.org67) loveforbiz.com68) lyrics-central.com69) maccurtis.com70) meshplex.org71) mexicanvacations.capeone.net72) middlefingergod.com73) modernmommas.com74) molly.kalafut.org75) mtbot.com76) namaste.org77) nautic.co.nz78) netballfun.com79) neverbecomplete.com80) newadvent.com81) newadvent.net82) newsofdoom.com83) nineslashes.com84) noalcinturo.org85) onlymormon.com86) orienteeringns.ca87) paloscreativos.com88) paloscreativos.com" gping="&POS=107&CM=WPU&CE=85&CS=AWP&SR=85&sample=089) pathtalk.org90) payloan.org91) peneguy.org" gping="&POS=86&CM=WPU&CE=64&CS=AWP&SR=64&sample=092) penis-enlargement-resource.net93) perfectbackups.info94) pharma-less.com95) phentermine-weight-loss.com96) prefabdweller.com97) prepfile.com98) resourcemoz.com99) rockycovington.com100) rudetits.com" gping="&POS=96&CM=WPU&CE=74&CS=AWP&SR=74&sample=0101) secondcomic.com102) snapcrepes.com103) snikiddies.net" gping="&POS=94&CM=WPU&CE=72&CS=AWP&SR=72&sample=0104) snikiddy.com105) spencerolsen.com" gping="&POS=79&CM=WPU&CE=57&CS=AWP&SR=57&sample=0106) sqwonk.org107) stackndie.com108) storchconsulting.com109) summitnewmarket.com110) tased.thetrenchcoat.com111) tennesseewx.com112) thebrokenmind.com113) thebungalow2002.com" gping="&POS=104&CM=WPU&CE=82&CS=AWP&SR=82&sample=0114) thefragrancefactory.net115) theoreticgames.com116) thetrenchcoat.com117) thewhitehawk.com118) tinyhousereader.com119) tr.thetrenchcoat.com120) tuoitresoidong.com121) tylerproject.com122) tylerprojects.com123) woodcraftwanderings.org124) wpcoders.com125) xhtmlthis.com126) yefomit.com" gping="&POS=43&CM=WPU&CE=21&CS=AWP&SR=21&sample=0 now i know, that this server hosts 125 other sites and depending on the specs and configuration the server can be fast or slow.It also depends what sites there are on. If you have a lot of forums with shoutbox ( wrong configured shoutboxes in general) there will be slow downs at certain times. The server also reveals some info about itself.Server Type: Apache/1.3.39 (Unix) mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 mod_gzip/1.3.26.1a mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 PHP/4.4.7 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635.SR1.2 mod_ssl/2.8.30 OpenSSL/0.9.7aI also saw Terbayte has 2 other domains :) If it is a server with a lot of HTML sites you will do better, but in general expect a mix of both.Another thing to look out for is IF the server runs in SAFE MODE or not.safe mode is not bad, but will limit you for example in IPB gallery and some other mods. Also skins will need to be imported in a different fashion. You will have less of these problems with SAFE MODE off. Next, What to look for when looking for a new shared host? When I'm looking for a linux shared-hosting solution for a future non-static website that I intend on developing, there are a couple of points I look out for when browsing through the package-plans' features : 1)PHP 5.2.x - PHP4 is on its way out - on 13th July 2007, php.net officially announced the PHP 4 end of life announcement. With PHP 6 on the way, its high time new php-projects are written in PHP 5. Moreover, with the new OOP model (inclined towards Java and C#), frameworks are better off in PHP 5. Also, something known as phar has sprung up. Its on lines with Java's WAR format where you can distribute your application as a single archive file - though this is yet to be fully implemented. As for specifically PHP 5.2.x - many changes were introduced from ver 5.1.0 to 5.2.0 - there's even a migration documentation from 5.1.0 to 5.2.0 ! One of the major additions are the JSON and ZIP (using zlib). The JSON extension bridges a big gap - you can now create javascript JSON variables directly from php arrays ! 2)MySQL 5.0.x - Stored Procedures, Triggers, Cursors, Views etc which are actually very handy once you get to know to use them. These are available by default in PostgreSQL and MS SQL Server. Four years ago, when my friend was into ASP .NET development and MS SQL Server, he mentioned how stored procedures saved a script-development time. This would be at the cost of using more database resource, but its something we MySQL guys are pretty late into. Another introduction is the maximum length of VARCHAR data-type from 256 to 65,535. Very often I wanted to set the maximum length to 1000 characters and there's no solution to do this in versions 3 and 4 except to make them of TEXT type. The drawback of this was that TEXT fields can't be indexed, which is something I can't settle for. Indexing is important for faster queries even if it requires a whole lot more disk space. For example, if I had a field named `URL`, I would want it to set it to atleast 1000 characters variable length. Many URLs are bound to be more than 256 characters. And URLs can really be INDEXed or even UNIQUEd. 3)Apache 2.0.x - Apache 2.0 has a whole lot more to offer than Apache 1.3. But the only thing I'm interested in is the RegExp part of mod_rewrite which offers more pattern syntax characters like ? (extends the meaning of) character. 4)SSH - command-line shell access is something developers are more comfortable with. Period. 5)Control Panel - Only a couple of them are common - either CPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin or an in-house one. I don't have a preference, but Plesk has the option of changing DNS settings. 6)(Optional) PostgreSQL - Sometimes, PostgreSQL can be better off then MySQL - you normally PostgreSQL available on hosts providing Plesk, as a lot of other features come with an additional Plesk addon (Plesk Expand) and PostgreSQL support is one of them. 7)(Optional) mod_python, mod_perl - Perl and Python are enabled by default on most hosts via CGI. For developers, developing on linux PCs, this won't be an issue, but those who develop linux based stuff on Windows will have the problem of constantly updating the shebang-line for each time to upload to update the script. This can be a major headache if VIM is not comfortable enough or too slow to edit on the server side. People who code in Perl wouldn't want mod_perl anyway. When it comes to Python, since Google has the Python creator as their employee and since most of their scripts are based on python (obviously), there are some useful scripts provided by Google that are distributed in Python code. One of them is the Sitemap generator. 8)Support - and of course, impeccable support - something you should test before hand by asking a couple of smart questions and judging them and also reading reviews of the company. This probably the toughest part, but when you're investing in hosting, allow yourself to estimate that half of that investment goes for support while the other half is for features. in addition i am my own host, so i dont host other websites but my owm, on a dual XEON server 3 Ghz, 4 giga ram 3 HDD, auto backup stream to second server all protected by a hardware firewall. In all cases i own the hardware. :P http://www.xxx-devils.com/DevilsLair/4thBanner.jpgVisit My TopListVisit My Pagerank Toplist

Michael John Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 I'm on a semi-annual plan with HostGator, haven't had any issues with them yet, my renewal just came a few weeks ago and although the low Australian dollar is making it expensive for me, I think they are well worth it! Ronald Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Well I'm a year behind and a dollar short. I have two Hosting Plans, both with Byethost. I find them to be good, at least with me.. Support is excellent. Price is fair. I also use them for Domain registrations. I have four of them. Ronaldsarcade
-DarkGizmo- Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 If you still need a host, hostgator is good :)
